I have a '94 dx manual with the 1.6L that up until this week has been perfect. Now the car wont stop overheating. I have replaced the radiator and t stat. Now I have even gone so far as to remove the t stat. Car still overheats. I know my water pump is working cause now that the t tsat is out, if I have the rad cap off it shoots water out the top like old faithful. That and now I am losing coolant and I dont know where from. Car has 214,000 mi on it and I have just put seafoam in with the gas on the last 3/4 tank. I have also pulled the rad off and flushed it from both the top and the bottom to try to get any debris out if there was any in there. Also I stuck a water hose in to both the upper hose inlet and the lower hose inlet to flush it both of those ways and still the same thing. Please help as this is my work car and right now it is my only car.
First time it overheated was about 1 year ago which led to a new rad. This time I had about a 70/30 mix with anti freeze/ water and everything was normal with no information leading up to it. this time it got the mix hot enough that when I was parked on the side of the road waiting for it to cool off enough to gert the cap off it melted som plastic to the cap and also melted the little nipple in the coolant tank off. now as long as I keep a check on the coolant the guage just floats up and downdepending on whether or not I am climbing a hill.
well you did mention your losing coolant so surely you have a leak eather from the radiator the hoses or its being burnt inside the engine. so you will definately have to find that leak.
I said that I was losing coolant, yes. BUt i think I would have noticed it coming frm the rad or the hoses. and no it is not in the floor board either. The car only smokes on start up and I have never seen it smoke any other time. there is no coolant on thew ground so where is it going? And dont say the oil cause I have already checked that. Honestly I'm lost right now. I dont know where to look any more.
I am going to say WATER PUMP, irregardless of your current thought. Or you have a clogged inlet

ok ive just did some reading up... as you already mentioned you checked your hoses, radiator and you say you see no coolant on the ground so its not leaking from the water pump so my only thinking is that you have a leak eather in your head gasket, cylinder head(s) or in the block which is unlikely cause they are pretty strong but i do have a question... does your radiator fan work? and does your car smoke every time you start up?. and when you start with the radiator cap off on a cold start does your coolant bubbles up?
Ok............... With the cap off even on a cold start if I have a rad full of fluid, then yes it bubbles. I have the t stat out so it is a straight through flow. As far as it getting that hot.................. that happened about 2 days ago. Yes it smokes on every COLD start up. If the engine is already up to temp then it wil not smoke. And yes the fan works.
ok kool if it happened 2 days ago then it wont start to smoke on every start up till it gets worst and sence you have the stat out and its a straight slow and there are bubbles on start up then am leaning towards a leaking head gasket.
Check your oil for coolant... if you don't find any.. sounds like a crappy. water pump.

well if you know your way around engines and have experience on them it wont be that hard if not discuss it with a trusted and professional mechanic.. am not sure if we have a DIY of it in the DIY THREAD. i would advised if your having this done also change your belts and water pump the same time.
Are the head bolts Torque to yield or can they be reused? only reason im asking is that I also have a 00 windstar in the shop with what I was told was the fuel pump and a 98 Mercury with the intake cracked also in the shop. So the more I can save on this one the better off i am. Also is it easier to pull theg head with the Intake still attached or removed?
If its not JUST a head gasket problem then it is a water pump problem. Check both while you have it apart. I remove the manilods from the head and leave them attached in the car. No screwups on missing hoses or connectors.
Also if the engine has been severely overheated as you suggest the head and maybe the block will not be flat. CONFIRM they are before re-assembly. Use ARP assembly lube to get consistent torque when you put it all back together.
