Tranny Issues

Hey guys,
I was driving home from work today, Car running just fine.
Stopped at the grocery store for about 2 minutes.
When I came out I started the car, Put it in drive and the car was slipping when I hit the gas.
Only in first gear. If I put it in low 1, It takes of just fine.
I also noticed now when I put it in reverse,I get a clunking noise.
Fluid levels look fine.
Am I screwed here? No money for a tranny or a new car at the moment.
I am wondering how long I will be able to limp the car along until it totally sh!ts the bed.
Its a 95 corolla 1.8 automatic.
140,000 miles.
Thanks in advance.

sounds more like it was running in 3rd, it could be a wiring issue.

So I just took her down the road (after sitting for a couple of hours) to get some beer.
Everything is back to normal?????
Maybe the tranny over heated?
I checked my coolant it it was a little low (not bad) so I topped it off.
I am in Florida and it was hot as a sunbitch today.
Do trannys over heat?
I am guessing they do because my last truck had a tranny cooler on it.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff

Give it a couple days and see what happens. It could have been the heat.

Talking

Thanks guys.
Today I went from thinking my tranny was fried to realizing it might be something way more simple.
I feel much better now. The beers might have helped a little as well!!!!!
I think tomorrow a coolant flush, A tranny flush with filter is in order.
Thanks again.
Great forum!

check the connectors on the front for damage to the wiring or loose connections.
