gen 7 Transmission doesn't like to stay in gear...

Hi my girlfriend has a 1993 Corolla with what i believe is the 3 speed automatic transmission. Anyway, recently it has began to do some wierd things. For example, it constantly seems to disengage at low speeds (under 5mph) and after coming to a somplete stop and then voilently re-engage again once you put your foot down a little more. As it has become hotter this issue has became more prevalent. Also, the other day, it would not shift out of first gear whatsoever. Keep in mind, it has never once slipped while in gear so the plates are probably fine. As to the disengaging, im thinking its something to do with the torque converter but automatic transmissions are not exactly my knowledge base. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any clue what is going on with it and how complex (expensive) of a job it would be. Thanks.

Check fluid. My car did this, and all the clutch packs were burn't up. Expect to buy a new trans.
