Noob question, is the 1.6L single cam and 1.8L dual cam?

Both are dual overhead cam.

I removed the valve cover today and noticed it only has one cam...... It's suppose to be a 1996 1.8L. I didnt get check the engine #. Could this be another generation engine in a 1996 chassis?

That looks right to me, but there's no way a USDM Corolla has a SOHC engine unless someone went through a lot of pain to swap one in... under the valve cover it should look like this:

yep that's what it looks like. I was going to change the timing belt and notice it's a SOHC.

Ah, but it's not SOHC, there's two camshafts up there. The intake camshaft is just driven off of the exhaust camshaft in a slave cam configuration instead of independently off of the timing belt.

oh crap I meant there is only one camshaft gear. Isnt there suppose to be two? I didnt install the belt because I thought maybe I bought the wrong one. duh.... lol I see the two shafts but what was confusing me is that there is only one gear turning both shafts.

There are two cams. But it's a slave cam design with only one pulley. It's still classified as DOHC.

engines that have 2 camshaft gears or 4age engines and 3sge engines etc.. other words most high performance engines carry 2 camshaft gears 1 for intake and 1 for exhaust.
