'93 Corolla single 'click' while trying to start
Well, it's sort of a long story, but I had a '93 Corolla behind my house that I'm trying to fix. A friend got a new car, and left hers at her apartment complex with expired registration so it got impounded. I went with her to get it out of impound, and it wouldn't start. there was a single 'click' any time you hit the key. We tried jump starting it, thinking it had enough battery power to engage the solenoid, but not spin the motor. no go. Wound up using her Impala to get it rolling, then dumping the clutch. Started fine that way.
I got it home, took the starter out of it, and brought it to Autozone. They said it was pulling high amperage, so I thought "Well, there's the problem" and bought a reman starter.
Popped it in, hit the key, and the same thing happened. I can hear the 'click' and now a sort of buzzing or humming noise like the motor is trying to turn as long as I hold the key on. The new motor is a bit shorter than the old one, but the mounting points and connections were identical, so i didn't think that would be an issue.
Where should I look now? Maybe there's an electrical connection issue to the starter? The battery may still be weak? Anyone else here had this problem and figured it out? I need to get this beast running because my sister may want to use it until she can get a newer car.
