Lightbulb Elusive crotch vent--now with part number!

There was a thread that popped up here earlier regarding the availability of a vent below the steering wheel and the duct that provided it--while I can't find that thread right now I just got off the phone with a local dealership to try and track the part down.

Good news: Non-North-American LHD cars do have a part number for the thing, it's 55432-12360-B0.

Bad news: Toyota USA has apparently severely cracked down on their US dealerships importing JDM/EDM parts unless ridiculous hoops are jumped through. No TRD parts from Japan are available, W154 housings for 1JZ/2JZ stuff have gone to the 'call warehouse, provide US-imported JDM VIN, provide picture of failed part' levels of verification.

So.....anybody in Canada that can look this up and tell us how we can get our hands on the ductwork for a crotch vent? Pretty please? You have no idea how many recurring cases of swamp-ass you could eliminate...

Standard? Optional? Sourced from back-alley automotive duct-work peddlers?

There's a guy in the For Sale section who is parting out a Geo Prizm. Perhaps you could ask if he has the crotch vent that you're looking for:

Parting Out: 94 Geo Prizm

EDIT: Here's the original thread that you were having trouble finding in your first post:

I just spoke with a Chevy dealership today and while they do have the part listed for the Prizm LSi (even though, strictly speaking, this was before Chevy owned Geo...nice support, though!) it's listed as discontinued. Looks like the only way to get one of these is from a junked Geo or possibly a LE-spec Corolla...

I picked up a vent duct and vent from the junkyard for someone overseas today (right hand drive). I also got another vent from a Levin that looks identical to the Corolla one, except it sits slightly futher out at the back, still fits perfectly however. If the guy overseas pulls out then I'll be selling the vent separately (as the RHD duct won't be of any use to you guys in the US, lol). If anyone is keen let me know as I can get more (if you can't source the vent duct over there then just cut a rectangular shaped hole in your existing duct and it will work the same) -

Wait wait wait, so do we all have these ducts already installed through that area, just minus the hole for the vent?

Yeah, you should do. The duct is just the one that leads to the driver's side vent (closest to the window), except it has a hole in it for the crotch cooler. Remove the lower part of the dash under your steering wheel and you should see it.

I'll do a teardown with photos this Thursday/Friday when I get back home unless somebody else beats me to it. If there's the duct, there'll be yet another DIY up soon afterward...

Had a look at a base model Corolla at the junkyard on the way home earlier and the standard duct is definitely there, and it takes the exact same route as the genuine one. It's also pictured in Adam's DIY too (pic 4) -

DIY Drivers front lower vent install

All you'd have to do is cut the hole for the airflow to come through. The only difference would be that the hole wouldn't be 'flared' like the OEM duct, but the airflow will still be delivered just as well to the vent.

I posted this in the DIY thread, but it's worthwhile to post in here too:

I was at the junkyard today and had a look in a base model wagon. Sure enough, it had the same duct going under the dash, and it even had the flared part which directs the airflow to the crotch vent, except it was all filled in with plastic. All you'd have to do is drill or cut that small piece of plastic out (a craft knife or sharp blade would work well), get a vent (got some available here if you need one) and you'll be good to go. No need to source the duct elsewhere as you'll already have one that does the exact same job. Remove the lower part of your dash on your driver's side and you'll see what I mean
