Geo Prizm Auto to Manual Swap

I'm new here! I have a '94 Geo Prizm that I love. It has around 160k miles on it.

It has the 1.6L engine (4A-FE) and the 3-spd auto trans. Now the trans has started slipping in 1st, and I want to replace it before I end up stuck on the side of the road in February when it finally goes kaput.

I'd love to swap the trans out for the 4-spd manual, but I'm not sure how tough that would be. I am mostly concerned about the computer issues. My boyfriend will be the one helping me (meaning doing 99% of the work) and he has done this on older stuff (a 70-something Nova and a '81 Blazer) but not one anything as new as '94.

I don't think cost will be that bad unless there are surprises. I know the trans itself will be $50. If I am not mistaken, the CV Axles are the same in Auto and Manual models so those can stay. I will be getting everything possible off junkyard cars.

Are there any other strange things to worry about with this particular car versus older stuff?

I could use a 4-speed off a Corolla correct? If not, there were more than a few Geos with manual transmissions at the junkyard last time I went, but I think some of them were off the 1.8L engines.

I Googled and looked around on this forum, but I couldn't really find anything about how this would affect the computer.

Also, a 5-speed wouldn't be bad, but I'm not sure if they are available for the 1.6L, and I don't want to make things more complicated.

Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Welcome to the forums. The 1.6L 4A-FE also came in 5-speed manual. I'd recommend going for the 5-speed as opposed to the 4-speed but it depends on the availability of the gearbox where you live. If you have a donor car, the swap will be a lot easier.

Thanks for the help, I will look for the 5-speed if possible. If not, a 4-speed manual definitely beats a 3-speed auto!

Is there any difference between years in 7th gen cars? Mine is a '94, would I be able to get a trans from something with a different year? Or would it not match up?

The transmissions are interchageable between 1993-1997.
