Ticking noise after belt replacement

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to ask a few questions. I noticed one day that my ac was not working and so I found that the ac belt was gone. So I replace the ac belt and the alt belt because it looked damaged possibly from hitting the broken belt. I start the car and I noticed a ticking sound which initially was not there when I replaced the belt but became noticable when I took it out a hours later. I noticed that one of the ribs of the alt belt was loose. I tried tightening the belts and it didnt go away. I removed the ac belt and the noise was not there anymore then I noticed that my harmonic balancer looked like it was acting strange. The outer ring would seem to move out as I revved the engine. Then it would come back in when the engine was back to idle. Is this normal?

Its semi common for outer rings to become unbonded from the rubber. Fix it before it goes clunking off down the road.

just an update. That ticking sound was when I put all the belts in place. I removed the ac belt and then the ticking stopped. I checked the ac pulley and there is very very very light play in the pulley. Its hardly discernible.

I checked other forums and apparently the harmonic balancer on corollas almost never goes bad. Today i checked and the outer ring only comes out when revved very high.

Looks like my ac compressor bearing is shot. Anybody in the forums has rebuilt one?

to recap...I noticed that my ac was not working then I found out that my ac belt broke. Replaced the belts thinking they were just old then my car was making a ticking and humming sound.....take the ac belt off and the noises were gone. Today I pulled out all the belts and lo and behold my crank pulley was f*&^$%#. The outer ring slipped right off the inner ring!!!! I didnt know these could happen!

Lesson learned....broken belts may be a sign of crank pulley failure!
