Budget supercharged 4AFE build thread

First, remove powersteering pump then add one AISIN AMR300 (150 USD, brackets included in price of piping installation, see next point):

Then remove battery and fuseboxes and install intercooler and piping (50 USD for the intercooler, about 100 USD for piping install including all labor and materials):

Vent the valve cover so the engine doesn't blow oil seals when under positive pressure (part of the install, catch tank was 50 USD):

Add some extra injectors for extra fuel under boost (the chunky block between the TB and intake mani, two extra injectors, about 75 USD total for the adaptor, mini fuel rail, and the two injectors):

Add a BOV so pipes don't shoot off when you close the throttle (60 USD for a used BOV):

Now just needs a piggyback and some on-dyno tuning:

CT20 being rebuilt (twincharge?!):

Extra intercoolers:

dude, thats going to totally suffocate the engine at topend? it moves 300CC per rev, spinning at 5,000RPM thats 1,500,000 CC per minute of air or 1500L per minute and thats roughly exactly the amount of the engine needs without a supercharger on it. its made to enhance a 600CC engine at low speed, but I'm curious what you can get out of it.

why the single supplemental injector? not worried you'll get a lean cylinder one and a rich cylinder four? why not just use larger injectors and tune it for that?

hmmmm ive never seen such a build like this before but am curious to how much you gain and if its reliable in the long run plus the intercooler to me would be better suited eather at the front, behind the bumper provided by a duct to flow air or on top like some GT turbo starlets with a hood scoop to catch as much cold air as possible, so am really curious on the numbers your achiving.

So am I, need to get it tuned and on a dyno.

I do have a set of Starlet GT injectors (295cc), and a set of high impedance 440s (off an older Evo I believe). There's actually two extra injectors on the adaptor. We're gonna try it this way first because the last guy that boosted a 4AFE here and used bigger injectors had crap idle and off-boost driveabilitiy wasn't very good.

Oh, and the charger is good to 25,000 RPMs so the pulley sizing is setup to overdrive the charger roughly 3.x to 1, so at 6000 rpm engine speed the charger is running at about 20.000 rpm.

I wanted the intercooler under the hood mainly for cosmetic and insurance reasons. If I plow the front end, there's a better chance of everything non-standard surviving if it's under the hood and not in front of the radiator, ha ha. Insurance won't pay for any non-standard mods that take a hit...

There's an air scoop in my front bumper that routes air to the intercooler, the intercooler is actually sitting on top of a hole where the scoop exits air out of.

Perhaps I should append the title of the thread, the whole idea behind this build was boost on a budget. The charger was cheap (about 150 USD), as were the ancillaries (intercooler, piping, brackets, injectors, adaptors, etc.), basically I had the whole thing put on for under 500 bucks (gotta love living in a "third world" country).

Hey, if it doesn't work then I've got a turbo being rebuilt, ha ha ha...

Drove it around and the vac meter maxes out at zero a little before 2000 rpms and stays pegged until redline. Yes, I have a boost meter but I haven't gotten around to installing it yet (can you tell I'm lazy?). Is the car faster? Dunno yet, but roads where I used to have to kick down from fourth can now be handled in fourth, but that's not really an objective result. Definitely needs to get on the dyno...

well my numbers for air needed are with a 30% efficient engine, which is at the higher end for a gasoline engine. probably more like 20% for a 4A-FE. that would be a great supercharger for a lawnmower racer or a motorcycle though.
