1.6 liter headgasket replacement

Replacing the headgasket on a 96 1.6 liter 4a-fe.

Do I need to use new bolts or can the old bolts be used if they're in good condition?

Is there a DIY thread with any other important details? (like for example "winding the clockspring gear"?)

Someone said if one of the 2 camshafts has a split gear, you're supposed to twist the little gear, ever heard of this?

I've been searching on the bolts, but the "search topics only" option doesn't seem to work.

I have never heard of the split gear thing. I had to do the head gasket on a Celica ST and there was nothing special about it and very straightforward. You just need to know the specs of torque and make sure that you label where all the cam fasteners were and put them back in that order. Besides that, I would say go with a new set of head bolts just for the heck of it.

Yes, you got to use a new set of head bolts. The old ones have been in so much stress and are relieved, lowering their threshold.

torque sequence

Anyone have a link to the headbolt torque sequence? Just so I can compare it to my only slighlty helpful chiltons manual?

Note that they say 22 to start and then TWO 90 degree twists.
