I have a 96 Corolla with the 1.8L does anyone know if there are any other options for plug wires other than the 5 mm?

TRD sell red ignition wires for the 1.6/1.8L, but they're pretty pricey and they're still only 5mm. You're really not going to notice a difference by going any larger than the OEM spec. There's 10.2mm ones on eBay but they're mainly for looks more than anything, and you won't be able to use your OEM plastic wire separators with them. I'd say either stick with OEM, or go for a reputable brand such as NGK, as mentioned above.

I hate to say this but despite my praise for NGK's plugs their wires arent very good. I got a year, and they werent warranteed. Just get something from the parts store with lifetime warranty and swap them every few years.

Did you find out whether they were defective or not?

That's odd since my NGK wires have been nothing but good for me.
