Well I learned my lesson about aftermarket oil caps.
First of all don't buy the cheap ones on eBay
Mine actually came with bad machining work. There were metal shavings all over the THREADING... it's an OIL CAP!!!
After a thorough cleaning, I went to screw it in and it didn't go in all the way. Forget it, it doesn't work no matter what. I took it off and put it back on and revved up the car a few times and discovered that although it didn't screw in all the way, it worked fine sometimes. You can also screw it in and it will seem normal but one of the times I took the cap off and bits of oil had sprayed out underneath the cap, past the threading. That means it wasn't making a proper seal. Time to go.
Also it gets hot as hell, which isn't good for my purposes because I have to top off my car a couple times a week.
Long story short, stick with an OEM style cap.

I've never had a problem with my Simota oil cap, but I can see where the cheap knock-offs would have trouble. I want to put a TRD one on but they're so damn expensive. One thing that bugged me about the OEM oil cap is that when it's screwed on, the words 'ENGINE OIL' face up the wrong way and there's no way to fix it

LOL, very true! I was actually thinking of painting the cap.

I thought mine was the only one to do that. Oddly, my Power Steering fluid cap faces upside down too. You're not the only one who is driven crazy by it.
I got an aftermarket one off of a DESTROYED sprinter at the junkyard (I was as suprised as you to hear about the sprinter in a US junkyard) MOST of the engine was gone, and there was a 4afe valve cover with oil cap smashed through the window LOL but it works fine, I do not see a brand name on it though, appears to be painted black.

Post some pics if you decide to do it. I'd be keen to see what it looks like painted

Good to know that I'm not the only one out there that feels that way, or even noticed it. It's strange how Toyota didn't start the thread further around the cap so that it screwed on with the text facing the front of the car. Fortunately with most aftermarket oil caps they're just stickers in the centre, so you can simply peel it off and put it the right way around when the cap is screwed on tight. The TRD oil cap actually comes with the sticker separately so you can decide exactly where you want it without sacrificing the strength of the adhesive.
One thing that annoyed me with the Simota oil cap is that the small fake Allen key screws around the cap had hints of surface rust after a couple of months of use. I ended up taking them out, sanding them, spraying them black again and then covering them in clearcoat. They've been fine ever since, but they should have been like that from the start

I always thought mine was due to the car previously being wrecked and tinkered with and repaired in a very... shadetree... fashion (granted the fixes have worked at the cost them being permanent). I assumed someone got a new cap/sticker and accidentally put it on wrong, or the threading had to be repaired or something at some point. The PS cap I can't really say why, as the label is painted/silk screened on I do believe.
