HKS Intake

Are these intakes legit?

These are the HKS "honeycomb" intakes.

Just wondering if they're any different in performance against a K&N or Secret Weapon R intake...

AND

Sorry for the big ass pictures...
but yea, I'm just curious on which one will suit best for a DIY custom CAI like Kiwi's. Or if it even matters and there won't be any performance difference. So please, compare, contrast, hate, and love on anything in this thread. I'd just appreciate any knowledge about the three cone filters would be best. Thanks guys.

I'd go for the third choice. I definitely wouldn't recommend going for the mushroom shaped HKS filter. Space is tight down under the bumper with a CAI, and that type of filter doesn't really perform well either. With the third choice (your typical pod filter design), stick to name brand filters such as Simota, K&N, or even 3A Racing if you can get your hands on one (they're really good filters but they're made in Australia so finding a stockist in the US might be tough).

Here's a really interesting test of 10 brand name filters which shows how much each filter flows and what level of filtration it achieved. Interestingly, the HKS mushroom filter got 6th for flow and 9th for filtration:

How much of a difference does a cone filter really do? I'm just using a cheap ebay one. If i can get more out of a better filter i'll switch.

In terms of performance, you won't notice a difference (unless you chucked it on a dyno). A higher quality filter such as a K&N or Simota will provide better filtration however, which is good for your engine. That alone is definitely worth spending a little extra on in my opinion.

We actually don't get a lot of Simota products here in the US either actually. There's only a couple of distributors I can readily find. The major one only appearing to sell their newer cold air intake systems. Only see one on eBay. This looks frikkin awesome though, I might just get it, thanks Kiwi: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Unive...Q5fAccessories

And we actually have plenty of 3A Racing parts. They sell them at all our major auto parts stores. LOL so there's some interesting info for ya I actually had a 3A Racing muffler tip on my Golf & Celica that my dad is now using on his Tundra.

K&N makes cylinder style filters or thinner/longer cone shaped ones as well.

cone shape is better because of its shape which is appropiate for small spaces and it better flow of air.
