Can you get the codes without a reader on a 96?

I posted earlier today about my check engine light coming on. I won't be able to take it into a shop to have the code read until next weekend, and the autoparts stores don't do it anymore. I searched the forums and saw that you could use a paper clip to read the OBD I codes on a 93. I tried it with my 96 but the check engine light didin't flash me a code ....is there another method of doing it or am I going to have to get a reader? I'm trying to see if I can take care of it in my spare time this weekend so any help would be grateful, thanks guys.

You'll need to get the codes read with an OBD-II scanner unfortunately. The good old paper clip method only works for OBD-I.

If you buy a code reader, a really nice one that reads all makes/models and gives the code and the description (some just give the code and no other information) is worth the investment. If not plenty of places read it for free.
