how do you know when they go bad? i have 220k on what appears to be stock shafts.

im also wondering if stock shafts will hold up on a lowered car. do i need to upgrade?

what is a half shaft?? a CV joint?? or the actual shaft??

wow ok... just googled it... do you americano's seriously replace the whole shaft with both joints rather than just replacing the outer joints if they flog out??

Half shaft last nearly forever as long as the boots on the CV joints are not torn and there are no clicking sound on turns. The shaft should do fine on a lowed Corolla unless you're throwing out over 500 HP, the shaft will hold together.

At 220K the rubber boots might be ready to tear. It's easier to replace the entire shaft than to mess around with a replacment boot.

8 months old is old enough to have worn or for you to have hit something, start with a balance as its the cheapest, if it goes away then you dont have to spend anymore money

It is common to have a bad shaft without leaking or clicking. Usually you can find the wear by moving the axle by the outer joint. Any movement means its toast.

i highly doubt that its wheel alignment, as when i load up one sideof the suspension at speed, it goes away, and its intermittent.

as far as checking for play, can i do that with the axle in still or should i remove it?

In that case I'll leave my experience as a suspension technician out of your thread.

Didn't realise you had built a car before.
