Where is the fuel filter located in my 97 Corolla?

My 1997 Corolla has only been starting about half the time. Sometimes it seems it's out of gas and sometimes it starts up. I want to replace the fuel filter to see if that's the problem. Where can I find it and is it difficult to replace?

its in the back corner on the drivers side, its in front of the brake booster, hard to miss...

it sounds like fuel pump to me, but you should replace the filter just in case.

good luck!

It doesn't hurt to replace the fuel filter they're cheap less then 20$. You can def change it yourself. Not that hard if you have the proper tools. The Haynes manual has a good write up. If you don't have one i can do a write up for you.

More likely a relay problem.

Hey I have a question. My fuel pump gave out about a week ago, so I ordered a new one on eBay. It said it came with a new pump and filter. Well I got the pump...and then I got this orange bag with a plastic piece inside...it almost looks like the bag they use for IV at a hospital, only much smaller...is this thing the fuel filter sock? I've been researching fuel filter parts and thats the only thing that Ive found. Can you tell me what I do with this thing?

It should be a mesh-like pouch. It should have a circular piece that you clip to the top of the fuel pump.

Hey man, I've been having the same problem with my car starting half the time. You helped me when I posted a few weeks back about my car not starting. Well I got the new fuel pump and it installed it. It starts more often now, but it's still giving me hell. I am going to replace the fuel filter also, but what should I check to see if it's a relay problem?

Bust out the old multimeter and see if the power connector at the pump is receiving enough voltage.

Though I think there is a method to test the relay itself, I'm not sure of it. I think I've seen it somewhere online or in a manual though it might not have been for our cars. The fuel pump relay is located behind the radio by the way. In my previous car when I had this problem I just went and bought it without even testing it because it was just $12 and under the hood and it fixed it.

So I've been looking for the relays and autozone quoted me $134?! Is this right? And when I checked autozone and kragen both of them say "not available online or in stores, call for details"? Its the EFI Main Relay under the hood right? And then the fuel pump one is behind the radio, I unplugged that one to de-pressurize my system when I changed the fuel pump...why are they so expensive?

Can I use a multi-purpose relay? Kragen has it for $16.99...

Yeah there's a lot of stuff they like to rip you off for. The part # RY920 apparently works as a multifunction relay and they sell it for around $20. RockAuto has it.
