Typically check for the following:

Fuel/Brake Lines (They tend to be rusted)
Motor Mounts (excess vibrations)
Exhaust (manifolds crack a fair bit)

Other than that, just make sure it's been tuned up recently. None of the transmissions seem more or less reliable than the others, but the 4 speed A/T models are smoother.

So what you are saying is the trannys are pretty reliable ? Thanks for the pointers on the other stuff aswell.

Any other issues to deal with ? I plan on getting one in the next month or two and have been weighing my options on cars, lately i have found the ford taurus (mostly tranny issues) to be very unreliable with a whole list of issues possibly showing up after 100k mile mark. Also the Ford Escort didnt do so well either they have been known to drop valve seats, but the zx2 escort is exement from the problem & suppose to have a decent trans.

I am really stuck on these corollas so i think that is the way im going to go if there are no major issues with them?

thanks again

A transmission going out a 160K is not out of the ordinary IMO.

And these cars take anything you throw at em. Transmissions have definitely improved in these years.

Rust, though not as bad as in the early models

Avoid the Taurus made from 96 onwards unless the transmission has already been replaced with something like a Jasper. The engines themselves though are pretty solid, but the cars are prone to electrical problems.

As for the rust, the worst spots for it are typically around the rocker panels, wheel wells, and underneath around the fuel lines like I mentioned. It shouldn't be a huge issue though in Texas since you don't have to deal with the road salt in winter time like we do up north.

158k on my 96 wagon with no issues (knock on wood). The only thing that's been replaced since day one is the left wheel bearing, starter, both CV axles, and the usual maintenance stuff.

220k miles, and it starts every morning for work.

burns a bit of oil and likely needs axles, but still gets me to work reliably every day.

The 7th gen rolla is great imo. Especially compared to all those Fords haha! The tranny is great. The engine is great also, never fails. But the 7afe burns oil. Not a problem, just fill it as needed. And yeah rust, lots of it around the rear wheels. But it is a wonderful car. Mine is at 250,000 miles and you can tell I'm planning on keeping it forever

same since i'm had it just done regular manitance and i've replaced the rear struts. Although i do need a new gas tank it leaks from the top. and i've had to change the brake lines from front to back. Although i live in canada salt speedies up the rust.

Other than that, still has started to me every day.
