Acetone

You should all invest in acetone for your car, I had been hearing rumors about it around my local area, so I gave it a shot.

I spent about $7 on a quart of acetone, I added about 2 oz to a full tank of gas, after bounding in the trunk to shake up the gas, i noticed its affects immediately, and even better was after I added new gas. The acetone helps the gas vaporize, giving better fuel mileage, less fuel waste, and better performance (I really noticed it). But better then everything else, it is supposed to clean out your injectors, once I added new gas I noticed that it was running much better than it did before I bought acetone. Please note that acetone is a chemical, and can be dangerous so please be careful, also it must be pure acetone.

Sounds a little risky, but I will research it and find out how much info there is about this.

Not had any issues at all with it, consider that there is 128 oz in a gallon, and I am adding 2 oz to a full gas tank.

This is a very old trick actually.

I figured this out a few years back when the gas price first rose.

More specifically, I add 3 oz pure 100% Acetone to 10 gal of gas. Here's my Acetone:

Acetone does a great job to clean out your engine. Your gas mileage will improve with every tank. I got 45 MPG.

However, on my high-mileage 7afe, the Acetone made it TOO clean. All of the carbon and oil deposits were cleaned out, so I got lots of oil smoke all the time. So in order to pass emissions test, I stopped adding Acetone, and the smoke stopped. Now I get 30 MPG.

So add at your own risk, maybe put the Acetone in once a year or once a month as a good maintenance and mileage boost

Old trick. Often times the Acetone actually breaks loose buildup lining the fuel lines or destroys plastic lines and clogs filters, injectors, etc. It can also dissolve plastics in a fuel tank (like pump parts, and pickups).

Oh, great! Just when I was getting all excited about this, then I read your post. I figured there had to be SOME side-effects. But what you listed makes it not worth the risk to me. I'd rather not replace anything in my car or engine right now. Later, when I start my project, it won't matter. But for now it's the only car I have and I can't afford to clog OR dissolve anything.

I don't mean to throw a wrench in the works here. Acetone is pretty seriously caustic to some rubber and plastic stuff. A lot would depend on how much was being used, and how the fuel system was constructed.

I'm not claiming to be the expert here but I have seen and heard about some problems using it.

The idea is that you use a such a small amount compared to gas that it has no effect on degrading anything. In theory. I can't find the article I read.... but I have tried it with no problems, only great benefits.

Dang it! I was going to ask if it mixes better with Black Velvet OR Rum. But since you're not an expert, I won't ask.

JUST KIDDING!!! But on a serious note, I instantly changed my mind on trying it as soon as someone posted the negative effects it can have on your car. I'm not rich and can't afford to start replacing or repairing things on my Camry. So, I'm going to pass on using it for now! (Unless it goes good with Black Velvet! LOL!)

acetone used in such small amounts will not harm your vehicle.

One thing to remember when using it though is that it is the basis for paint remover, so it will damage your paint if you drip some on it by mistake.

The biggest current problem though is that water completely neutralizes it. meaning the ethanol added to our gas makes adding acetone a complete waste.

there are countless web pages on this subject if you want to do some research.

if you want a better gas additive go to a nearby airport or dragstrip and purchase a few gallons of race 110 octane and add a quart or couple of quarts to your gas tank, it will bump up the octane and clean out the fuel system a little better, just dont mix too much or you will risk burning valves or pistons.

Famous last words!

It's easy to make such blanket statements, but you are still adding a serious solvent to your fuel system that was never intended for such use. Issues with O2 sensors, fuel pumps, injectors are way too costly for me to experiment with adding foreign substances to my fuel.

i agree with corollajoe about the 110 octane race fuel...every 2 months i use a bottle of octane boost and injector cleaner and dont have any issues and my car runs great but using acetone comes down to who wants to use it. i probaly would use it once if the engine has been neglected for a long time and oil and grime build up is at a high.
