What is this Sensor

1.6L '97
Found a loose engine sensor. It is about 2" long, black plastic. It starts out about 1/2" diameter and tapers to a point. It's connected with 2 wires (Red and Yellow). Nothing appears broken. It just appears it has been removed from where it should be inserted. However, I can't see where a "missing" sensor location might exist. Wire harness lead length is about 8"-10". It's more-or-less located underneath the throttle body. Any suggestions as to what it is and where it should be plugged into. Surprisingly, no OBD codes have shown up.

OK, I found that it gets inserted into the bottom (engine-side) of the air-filter housing/box. There is an obvious rubber grommet where it belongs. However, I'm still curious what it is. Since it is solid plastic (no openings on the actual sensor end), I'm guessing it must be used for sensing temperature. However, why would the ECU care about the temperature of the air-filter housing?? We are considering an after-market air filter (such as the Weapon-R Secret Weapon) and their instructions don't mention this sensor at all, nor does it have a hole to support it. If an aftermarket filter & pipe doesn't have a hole to re-locate this puppy, does it just get unplugged, lay loose, or what?

Thanks for the info. One of these days I'd like to get a Shop Manual, but the cost really bites.

A much cheaper alternative would be a Haynes or Chiltons repair maunal. They're not as detailed or thorough as a genuine Toyota shop manual, but they contain almost all of the information you'll ever need, including diagrams, sensor locations, torque settings etc. They pay for themselves in no time

It doesn't have a whole bunch of detailed diagrams, but once you learn your car, you can use this detailed repair manual for freezie:
