R.I.P 1996 Corolla DX

R.I.P to my well-taken cared of 1996 Toyota Corolla DX 1.6L 4 cylinder 3 speed Auto Trans. with 216, 899KM on it.

Recently I was having transmission problems where it was slipping when cold and when warmed it was fine 3 weeks ago - I did transmission fluid change last week also at the dealers. This morning as I was leaving the house for work, I warmed up my car for ~2 - 3 mins as normal and after reversing out of my driveway then put into drive, i heard a big "clunck" and the car jerked forward. at first I thought it was okay and continued 3- 400 meters to the stop sign and did a full stop, I then press the gas it just revs up like i am in neutral, the guy who lives by the stop sign saw me through the window and ran out saying there was a trail of red fluid running out of my car. reverse, drive and gear 2 did work and only "L" gear worked so i drove around the block and parked at home. So i had to take one of my parent's spare car to work. Auto Junk yards are giving me only $300 for the whole car if i sell it to them and if i replace the transmission it's $900 for part plus labor. the cheapest quote for a high mileage transmission (~21x,xxx km on it also) was $1850 all together for parts and labor

The car was purchased brand new in June, 1996 by my parents where they follow the routine maintanence for the car like no tomorrow. They then passed it down to me 4 years ago after getting my license, I also did all the major fluid change and was running excellent until now.

I guess With the $1,800 i can save and look for another 7th gen corolla + some extra cash for a well maintained car.

-chris

That's a damn shame. Dealers have ruined a lot of transmissions. You should look around for other options to see if you can find a good tranny out of a wrecked car and someone to put it in for a lot less than $1800.00.

If you buy another one, you won't know the history of it, and could be buying another boatload of problems.
