Hi guys, i own a Toyota Levin AE101, i want to put in a 4age 20valve blacktop engine. Iam not sure whether to put in a 5 speed LSD gearbox or a 6 Speed LSD gearbox.
I want the engine to perform to the max and i intend to use it for drag races and red light races as well.
thanks mate, any more mords you can think of that i could do in a 4age blacktop to make it run fast.
The Blacktop is already relatively fast in stock form, but if the engine has done high mileage then a full rebuild would certainly help. As for performance modifications though, start with the basics. Such as open trumpets, aftermarket header and exhaust system, aftermarket clutch etc. If you can find one, a Mine's 20v Blacktop ECU would really help too, but they're extremely difficult to find these days. You could literally spend thousands on mods if you wanted to. It just depends on how much power you want to make and how fat your wallet is

^ as kiwi said it depends on how much your willing to spend on modds, adding to what kiwi has said you can also upgrade your intake and exhaust cams, if you can't get your hands on the mines ECU then go with eather MEGA SQUIRT or GREDDY ULTIMATE ecu management, also you can get a lighter crankshaft pully and cam gears TRD plug leads etc etc etc just reaserch on what ur goal is and see whats best for you application. good luck and plz shair your progress on your project lol
If you want something for drag racing I would have to say gze, 20v are torque-less.
he is correct a gze conversion will gave you the torque you need to get off the line like a bat out of hell and take you down the quarter mile ok but if your sticking to NA then maybe a 16v 4age with ITB'S from a blktop or silvtop with management and tune to what you want can still gave to the torque you need for drags, it could also be possible with 20v but it comes down to how you have it tuned.
Open throttles will cost you power, but sound cool, the factory plenum and intake are very well designed, a good panel filter with ducting to the air box are your best options here.
The factory blacktop extractors are awesome, except for the end of the 2-1 section where it goes over the cross member, if you fix the crushed part of the 2-1 section you are going to get the best gain from the headers short of spending over $2000 dollars on some fancy extractors.
If your car came from the factory with a silvertop in it the exhaust should already be big enough for the engine, replacing the mufflers with straight through mufflers (not gay shiney ones that are as much use as a straight piece of pipe) will get you a bit more flow, and replacing the flogged Cat converter with a straight through resonator will help too, replacing the cat with a straight pipe will make the car sound shit, this is the most common thing done here and people always complain about what they sound like.
Cams will give you some decent power but to get the most advantage from them you will need more compression, the best way to get this is with forged high compression pistons, if you are going to this extent you should get your extractors custom built to suit the camshaft specs.
If you rebuild the engine, use silvertop rods as these are a lot stronger than blacktop ones, which have been known to make the quickest and easiest way out of the block that they can. Use these with some ARP rod bolts and you will have a very strong bottom end.
To make decent power you are going to need to rev the engine to about 10,000 rpm, for this you will need to get the engine balanced so that it doesnt vibrate itself to pieces.
For your gearbox avoid the 6 speed, as these arent as strong as the 5 speed and you will just have to change gear more often, get yourself a good aftermarket LSD too and if you are smashing the piggy bank you may aswell get a nice billet flywheel. The C56 is the pick of the 5 speed boxes, the c60 scott mentioned wont work... this is the 6 speed off a 2zzge, c160 is the one he would have meant.
The factory computer is designed to run on japanese 100 octane fuel, so if your fuel is any less than this the car wont run as well as it should, usually they will run very rich which is bad for power. An aftermarket computer will let you tune the car to suit the fuel that is available to you. The best budget option would be a megasquirt, and for the money you will pay for an E-manage you are better off getting a full standalone computer that has more control over the engine.
If you do all the above steps you should be looking at around 125-130 fwkw, and have a nice empty wallet.
If you dont care about staying NA, chuck a 4agze in, take the supercharger off and put a 4age inlet manifold on, and get yourself a cheap turbo manifold and t25 or t28 turbo, set up an intercooler etc and for about a quarter of what your NA 130kw cost you should be able to get an easy 150kw, with a whole lot more torque.
Also... you are much better off reading forums like club4ag etc as a huuuuuuge chunk of the information on here is wrong and misleading, and the people on club4ag have actually worked on 4ages in real life rather than just hearing about them.
BT Rods suck! If ur thinking about turbo then just change the rods & pistons to GZE & u automatically have the compression & strength to push turbo or SC. U do not need to change the complete engine to GZE.
thanks guys, but after reading the power that a 4agze will provide me with m bit confused.
I am on the verge of paying for a 4age blacktop 20 valve engine with a 5speed LSD gearbox.
Do you think i should get a 4agze instead of a 4age blacktop ?
ae92gtz, thanks for information on the turbo setup part, could you please be more specific on what all i will need for the turbo setup and teh cost. I am a complete new be on the 4age engines
