1.6 or 1.8

How do I determine which engine my 94 Corolla has? It has thrown a rod and I need to either find a replacement or rebuild or junk the whole thing. Would either mate up with the 5-speed trans? WOuld alternator, PS, AC etc all fit either engine?

Look at the sticker on your drivers side door jamb.

Look at the chassis code that's listed on there.
AE101 = 1.6
AE102 = 1.8

The most reliable way of checking which engine you have is to read the number on the engine block. It will be found to the right of the exhaust manifold.

Here's some photos (mine says 5A as it's a 5A-FE. A 4A-FE would show 4A, and a 7A-FE would show 7A) -

Should say what model engine under the hood.

7AFE is 1.8, 4AFE is 1.6.

Runs good? No leaks or issues? What would you want for it shipped to 38260? When could you ship it? Also, if mine is a 1.8, will my accessories all bolt right up? How about the flywheel? Bellhousing? You get the idea. I will check tomorrow to see what it is.

@ superdave- hey! could we jus see a photo of your engine, and then perhaps it would be easier to determine whether its a 4A-FE or a 7A-FE? i had a 2E carb engine and then swapped in a 4A-FE with 5 speed manual shift, and then after a year got a 12CT turbo, making it a 4A-FTE

Would you really downgrade to a 1.6?

Makes me no difference which I have or get as long as it is reliable. I am not going for performance and don't plan on any mods for this car. It's my daily driver and I just need it to get me A-B every day.

I can ship it tomorrow really depends on you. I will have pictures up tomorrow of the motor

But it ran strong with no problems it actually has spark plug wires that are probably 3 months old and there is no leaks and all of the wiring harness is there. Like I said before I only took it out because I swapped in the silvertop. And with the knowledge ive been given, the A series motors share the same bolt pattern so your transmission will work. Im not sure if the ratio's would be the same

Also mine was an auto BUT i have a 4afe manual ECU which would be included with the motor. PM and we can continue discussing if you have further interest.

My door sticker reads "AE101L-..." but I have a 7afe. Was the engine swapped or do some AE101's have 1.8??

According to all I can find it is a 1.6. The door sticker says AE101 and underhood sticker (after much cleaning) says 1.6. The numbers on the block are 1NXAE04B9. Not sure what that translates to.

PM sent to Loneyc

The information above wasn't accurate considering my friend has an AE101 (95) DX and its a 1.8 7A-FE motor and i have an AE102 (97) with a 1.6 4A-FE
