Need to step on gas to start in cold weather

Hello,

I have a 96 Geo Prizm with 171k on it. This problem just started this winter. I have recently changed the oil (5w 30), spark plugs, plug wires, and fuel filter after noticing I need to give the car gas in colder weather (below 25 degrees) after sitting over night in order for the car to start. The car cranks over and wants to start but I need to press gas pedal to start. I have a remote starter and it will not start with it in the cold weather because the gas pedal is not applied. Once started it will sputter a bit and then run just fine.

I have tried fuel injector cleaner before the weather got cold and looks like it is not helping.

Any thoughts on the cause? Injectors? Fuel Pump?

Thanks for your help.

My thoughts on that problem are leaky injectors. Additives do not do a very good job of "repairing" injectors covered in deposits. They do OK as a maintenance item.

Lets see what others think.

engine coolant temp sensor (2 wires), change it. they get lazy when they're old and read the wrong resistance when its cold out causing the computer to inject too much fuel on cold start up till the engine warms just slightly.

Bitter, thank you for the advice! I changed out the CTS and we are back in business. The car starts right up, it is currently -3 degrees and had no issues.

I do have another question however. I still need to step on the gas to start the car with my remote starter. If I turn the key without the remote starter I have no issues but as soon as I try to start without the key I have starting issues. Any suggestions?

No idea on that one, just double check all the wiring and connections.
