smokey 101e

typically this from my 96 101e corolla sedan
come down a hill & well smoke, smell it see it. has done it since i bought it 5 years ago @108,000 now 142000.
Is this common with these as i have seen others blow smoke at the bottom of a hill too ,but the oil doesnt drop much on stick.
Rings or valve seals?
any advise appreciated thanks

Huge valve seal problem with these engines apparently. Something like that is exactly what I was told to do to test for valve seal problem, go down hill, let go of the gas, and then hit the gas again and if there's smoke it's the valve seals. Apparently an easy way to tell if it's rings is if it's smokes all the time. Not many people know these things though, gotta do a lot of research like I have.

I guess you never know, but it would be worth it to try. It's worth it for me because I burn a quart every 200 miles or so. I can't keep on like this.

You may not need to pull the head to do it. I think you can do it by just removing the valve cover and cams, but not sure. I actually meant to ask that question here soon.

Yes, you can do it w/o removing the head. I asked the same question some time ago. Have a look on this thread:
Valve stem seals' impact on oil consumption

As for the tool to depress the valve springs, here is a home-made one that does not cost a fortune
