So I seem to be coming here a lot now with questions but this time I have a little more basic knowledge on the subject. I plan on buying a decent car stereo in the near future. I'll be doing the whole deal; front speakers, rear, tweeters, sub and amps. I'm looking for any recommendations and dos and donts for a first time buyer.
I'll be buying all of my stuff from either Future Shop or Best Buy as I can get the components basically at cost. One question I have first of all is with a 4 channel amp can I run it to my front and rear speakers as well as my tweeters or will the quality suffer? Or does it simply depend on the power of the amp.
As far as a deck, I don't need anything fancy other than a USB port and enough preouts for however many amps I'll need. For subs I like clean and accurate bass and I'm looking at getting two 10" most likely. Also a little off topic but as far as a security system is concerned should I just get automatic door locks as well while I'm at it to get the most out of a security remote?
So far this is my list of what I'm looking at for posibilities: (in brackets is the futureshop part #)
FRONT:
$170 - INFINITY KAPPA 42.9I (10108228) 60W RMS 180W PEAK
$140 - INFINITY REFERENCE 4032CF (10121790) 25W RMS 75W PEAK
Well MTX subs aren't known for their cleanliness and accuracy as much as they are known for poundin hard. I do have a friend with a couple of 12" MTX in his car and a 1000Watt amp and they hit pretty damn hard, they get uncomfortable actually. He says it's 1000Watts but doesn't know much about the difference in peak vs continuous (RMS) power and also doesn't know anything about resistance and wiring, so it could be actually running each sub at only 200-250watts RMS, but they still hit really hard.
I just recently joined CarAudioForum.com and I've been learning a lot of good stuff over there. It seems to me like there's a couple of guys over there who may work for a particular manufacturer and tend to push their products, but other than that you can get a lot of really good advice from very knowledgeable people. I would recommend going over there and making this same post and see what they can suggest as they know a whole lot of specifics of car audio.
Reading the posts over there I have learned about 'rear fill' and am thinking of modifying my front doors to take larger speakers or maybe put in a component mid and high set on the doors and eliminating the rear speakers.
Also for head units I have always used and preferred Pioneer, but it's more of a personal preference. I just knew guys who really liked the power of the Pioneer units compared to their cost, and prefer to tune on Pioneer decks because it's what they know. And my dad got me started by buying a Pioneer deck as my first head unit ever. For speakers though, I like your idea of going with Infinity or Alpine.

Cheers for the info. I joined the website and am getting some information. My only question geared at these forums is this, as far as the front speakers if I'm putting them in the door can I use any size speakers and then I'll just require a customer installation or will 6"x 9" speakers not work at all in my car door?

USDM Corollas have 4" front speakers as standard. You can fit 6.5" speakers in the front doors if you make a custom bracket or get JDM speaker brackets. I wouldn't recommend using 6x9 speakers in the front.

EDIT: My mistake those were my rear speakers I just got them mixed up. It's actually 6 1/2"
Considering the placement and size of the existing front door speakers I would say the best bet is to either toss the existing speaker brackets, heavily modify them to fit 6.5s somehow, and/or make new ones. Of course you also have to bore out the panel to support a 6.5. From looking at it, we thought that 5.25s would be the best option for the front for installing without too much work. You'd be able to use the existing bracket and just slightly modify it. Powerful 5.25s might be your best bet.

Funny you should say that because as it turns out I'm going with the Alpine SPX-13REF which just so happen to be 5 1/4" so that works out perfectly. Figured I'd step my game up a notch
Good stuff man. For my money I would probably go with one of the Rockford Fosgate component sets. But it's all about your preference and what you can actually get. Hope your system gives you eargasms man!

So to make my life easier I'm just taking my brothers system.
1.Eclipse CDR 7000 deck
2.4 Alpine type X's (front and rear)
3.Orion XTR Amp (for Alpine X's)
4.2, 10" Rockford Fosgates (doesn't know the model but they sound pretty awesome) in a sealed enclosure
5. Planet Audio Big Bang (powering the subs)
6. 2 Capacitors
$825 in total for everything. Now just comes the installation. I'm totally lost in terms of installation so I'll likely leave it for the pros. I was quoted $520 for all that. Not sure if it's worth risking any of the installation myself. Read over some DIY guides and it's a little over my head, likely because I'm a hands on person so reading about it just confuses me.

You should contact that place I recommended to you in your automatic door locks thread.

I e-mailed them about the stereo install a few days ago. It'll be around $550 so I'm going to try and install a few pieces myself and have them do the rest.
O.K. so I've got all the equipment and I just need the cables and whatnot now. So I need new speaker wire and amp wire right? Would I need any special connectors for rear speakers or whatnot?
Yeah just get a complete wiring kit, it will have a long power wire, a ground wire, RCA cables for signal, the remote wire, plenty of speaker wire for your subs, and a fuse holder and fuse too.
