Motor mount problem

Hey guys,

about two weeks ago I started getting a bad vibration and scrappign coming from the left side of the engine (or the tranny side). A broken mount which I then replaced. The old mount had these rubber pads between the mount and the frame, which were worn also. The guy at the parts store told me I wouldn't need them, so I placed the new mount in without the pads. Also the old mount had this screw so a rod can be held in (green arrow) (parts reference refers as "stay"). Vibration was gone and 1 week later vibration is back again and worse.

I checked and seems that the metal part of the mount is hitting against the frame when I floor on the pedal on 1st gear. I took the mount out and it looks to be starting to break with just 2 weeks. Now I placed some rubber pads which I did myself and scrapping noise is gone but still vibration is felt slightly. All other 3 mounts are good.

What is the function of that rod?
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

It's aftermarket, maybe very bad quality.
OEM is around $120 down here. Does that seem a reasonable price or not?

A few years back I used to fill the mounts with urethane, that thing lasted but it was too stiff that vibration was terrible at idle, so I went back to normal.

No it's not reasonable at all, but thats about what I got quoted hahaha...I just live with it but my car isnt nearly as nice and clean as yours.

As for that rod, my 95 7afe doesn't have that, kinda looks homemade to me

The ground strap and the metal strap are reversed in their holes. The other end of it goes in the hole to the right of the mount.

Callum3 may not have seen it if he hasnt removed the airbox.

uuum you got me there,
don't understand

Callum, the rod has always been there, it is also shown on the parts reference diagram. Maybe because I got a jap spec with a 3E engine, it is there but don't know what it is for.

I dont have an airbox cuz of my DIY SRI...But i went back to my car and took a closer look, I have a empty bolt hole beside where the mount is for the clutch fluid line...Is that rod important or is in just for a little extra support?

I'm having a similar sound and my mounts were replaced 2 years ago (aftermarket). It looks like the front mount on my 1.6L Prizm has an adustable bracket (not a hole but a curved channel like on an alternator adjustment bracket). My guess is the engine is extremely close to the front crossmember and needs to be readjusted higher. Anyone experience anything similar? OP did you ever resolve your issue?

I dont have what you describe.

Aftermarket parts are so varied in quality you may have some bad ones. Remove and inspect closely.

The OP may not even be around since this thread is almost 11 months old. Start new ones instead of opening old ones.
