97 Corolla tail and dash lights out--with a twist

97 Corolla sedan. Dash lights out and tail lights out. I've read the archives and I know about the wire loom going through the trunk and how the wires can break. I also know it can be the headlight/multifunction switch. The car is two hours away from me and I've gotten the symptoms over the phone, so I can't check fuses, etc. Here's the twist: the dash lights go on when the brakes are applied. They go back out when the foot comes off the pedal.
Any ideas? I would very much appreciate it. It's my daughter's car and she's away at school. I could probably walk her through it over the phone if she knows what to do.

Thanks.

Thanks very much, Callum. As it turns out, I looked through the archives and found that very thread. This is my daughter's car. She's 20 and I don't want her to take it to some garage where the mechanics will try to rob her. She's bringing it home this weekend and I'll make the repair.

Thanks again.
