Squeal while turning

Hey guys I'm getting a weird intermittent squeal at low speeds while turning. I got the car with an empty powersteering container(where you put the ps fluid in). I read a little bit that it could be the belt, I put some dressing on that and no real change. What's the other options? Lets start with cheapest/easiest to fix please.
1994 DX Corolla
1.8 Auto-170,000
Thanks in advance!

Power steering pump could be damaged from the lack of fluid.

Belt could need replacing or tightening, dressing doesn't fix everything.

Could have a bad pulley.

How do I tell if the pully is bad? I believe the belt is good, it was replaced less than 10k ago.

My guess would be loose belts... tighten both the alternator belt and the power steering belt before even pursuing the pump.

You could also remove the power steering belt altogether just to see if it makes any difference. Once removed it cannot possibly squeal If things do go quiet, then at least you know that the steering is causing the trouble.

Depending on how the squealing sound is, chances are it could be the CV-joint boots.

cv joints pop/click while turning. i dont think thats what youre hearing. its more than likely the belt needing tightening if it was replaced 10k ago. do you have any power steering leaks?

It looks like a possible small one coming from the line to the right of the power steering pump.
To the right of the pump is referring when you are looking at the front of the car, into the engine compartment.

True, but I was referring to the *boots*, not the joint itself.

Difficult to describe a sound, but it is rather low pitch, sometimes a bit pulsating. It is rubber being squeezed. You can clearly tell that it is changing with the speed of the car.

Does the sound change if the car rolls and you put the transmission in neutral and then rev the engine a bit? If it does, then it is not the boots.

I haven't tried that yet, but will do so today and get back to you. If the squeal changes while I'm moving and rev it in neutral, it is the belt? If not it is more than likely the boots themselves?
Thanks for the insight

Correct.

As for belts, it could actually be either one, water pump (WP) and power steering (PS), or WP alternator and crankshaft. Power steering is driven off of the water pump, which in turn is driven from the crankshaft. Consequently, any increase in load on the PS pump will load both belts, thus making either or both of them squeal.

When I tensioned my belts, I started with WP-PS and tensioned it only so much that it still was fairly easy to spin WP and PS by hand. With the WP-alternator-crank belt removed for the time being. Then I installed and tensioned the WP-alt-crank belt according to deflection specs.

Overtightening the belts puts unnecessary stress on the bearings and makes things more difficult to spin so don't just stretch the hell out of the belts.

So I tried the neutral deal, and could still hear the squeal. What is this telling me?
I plan on checking the belt tensions more tomorrow.

But is the squeal exactly the same regardless of engine rpm while in neutral? This test was supposed to tell whether or not the sound *changes* in any way with engine speed. The options are not "squeal, no squeal" but "squeal, a little different squeal".

You could also try turning off the engine while the car rolls in the turn in neutral. In this test the options would be "squeal, no squeal". It will tell you if the sound comes from the engine (any part of it) or the wheels.
