Planning on a new ride this year. Sell my '95 within smog-certificate limits???

So planning to buy a new car this year (assuming Cali lifts the tax increase after 6/30/11). And since I'm not sure my '95 will pass another smog test without some work, and I've only got 90 days since the last pass before I'd have to have another one done (if I sold privately & didn't trade-in to a dealer), should I try & sell it now or just live with it thru June & see what happens??

I hate the thought of throwing a bunch of money at a (maybe) $2,000 car when I'll be working on saving to buy a new one. (assuming it might not pass smog).

Then again, she's so dang reliable, cheap & gets twice the mileage of my truck saving me approx $100/month that it's a car that actually pays me to drive. (Plus I just put new tires on her)

???

what could possibly cost $2000 on that car? Does it need a new engine to pass smog?

Thrown off by the way he wrote it? Edited:

Ya, sorry if that came acrossed unclear. The car's worth $2K at best (probably more like $1,500) and while I've kept her well and she's so reliable, I just didn't plan on having her more than a couple years & here we are 5 years (6 years in September) later and I've just decided I really want a new car now. (My '98 Camry will be my new 'beater')

And, of course, living in California if I didn't trade it in & had to pass smog again and I *didn't*, I'd suspect I could throw some hard-earned money at it (this God-forsaken state) to get it to pass. (Up to $500 here in Cali before you don't have to pay anymore on smog.)

If I were a bachelor, I could drive this thing forever, but the wife & kids are really houndin' me lately.

You could always post it on craigslist and say, buyer smogs, and see if anyone will bite
