Grinding noise, car will not move

I need some advice! My 1996 toyota suddenly started making a grinding noise and I pulled over and stopped. I checked underneath to make sure I didn't drop my muffler or Tie-rod. I restarted it and put it in gear, the noise was still there and my car would not go forward or backward. I had it towed but want to have an idea of what it could be and if it worth fixing. The mechanic over the phone thought it might have to do with the drive train (?) My car has 155000 miles on it. What should I do!!

Thanks as always,
Dawn

What were your symptoms and how much was the replacement tranny?

It made a loud grinding noise, suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. I went to the dealership for the work and it was around $900

Thanks for all the help. I guess the question is, is it worth fixing given the age of my car and mileage. I'll have to see what the mechanic says.

Thanks for all the help as always!
This forum is the best!
