in need of help!!

i have a 97 corolla witch i got for a winter beater, about 2 months ago the car died on me and i need some help.

i was driving the car it had a fresh full tank of fuel in it, and when i was driving the car kinda almost stalled out and if i matted the gas it would rev up after almost stalling and work fine, then on my way home that same day the car did the same thing but this time stalled, i try to start it, it starts and runs for a few and then stalls again.
my brother came and towed me to his house and the cars sat there ever sense. i went over again started it, it started right up ran for about 20 mins i hop in i go for a drive runs fine, i go and switch everything from my summer car into the winter car and put my summer car away and when i come back to the rolla its stalled and not running, then it wouldnt start, finnally got ir running again and take it, and sure enough stalls again and this time wouldnt fire up for a while.
i have people telling seems like i lost all compression, fuel pump went, or fuel filter.
the filter is brand new, so now people are saying fuel pump. i cant afford to spend money on it and hope it fixs it because im in the middle of swapping a carb v8 into my cobalt. just need this car to run ro i can start doing the fab work.

hopefully i can get this car running cause i love it and dont wanna send it to the crusher
thanks in advance

trifes idea only concerns idle. fuel starvation is a good guess but in an aged car you could also have a badly clogged catalytic convertor.
