Distributor - External vs. Internal Igniter

Hello all,

I'm a longtime reader of this forum, but due to the fact I'm usually able to find a solution to my problem using the 'Search' button, this is only my first post.

Anyway, my issue is this. The distributor failed on my Corolla (1995) and I was able to purchase a replacement from my local junkyard. However, once I consulted with the Haynes manual, I noticed that my old distributor had an external igniter, whereas my new distributor had an internal igniter. Despite their differences, are these two compatible? I couldnt' help but notice that my new distributor had 2 electrical connections, whereas my old one just had one. Thanks in advance!

Hey TelJanin,

I'm new to these vehicles, however, it would seem you would need to modify your wiring harness for the internal igniter. If you don't wire it up, it will be useless. I can't exactly explain what the igniter does, but maybe someone else here can.

I believe one of the igniter's job is to send the spark to the spark plugs and has been called the electronic ignition as well
