stupid myth

Talking to a friend that has a 96 corolla with like 85k miles on it. hes trying to change the tranny fluid (black I guess) possible original fluid? a lady before him was original owner. a friend that has a similar corolla tells him to reuse the oil but strain it. but his grandfather (whom i agree with) tells him to put new fluid (dexII) in. what u guys think since i know the reuse thing is a myth

Well i see how the straining will take out the small metal fillings. But i don't agree with it the new fluid from toyota only costs like 30 bucks. Just through about 3.8L in there and your good to go. The car will switch mint after your done.

Oh this myth is a hard one to kill. Everyone and their grandma knows about it.

They neglect to change the fluid for 100K, trans starts slipping (internal damage already done). They change the fluid and the trans later pukes. From the new fluid? No, from the old fluid.

They refuse to blame themselves for neglecting to pay the $50 for the service. So naturally they blame the new fluid. Because you know... they weren't in the wrong at all.

And what the hell is straining the fluid going to do? The trans already has one of those in there. If your actually managing to strain stuff out that unit is already toasted.

Mine had 131K on the original fluid... Couldn't believe it, shifts like a dream after I flushed the hell out of it.
