wont get in 4th gear when cold

my 1.6 1996 csi corolla has had this problem for so long now lol....im only 18, i know a fair bit about cars but my dad is so oldschool and has super trust in toyotas he just dismisses the problem when i bring it up...im fairly sure its the thermostat as the car takes FOREVER to warm up....

also when the car is running and stationary the temp will go to warm, but while in motion it will rapidly drop to cold. is this common? is this bad? yes i did search these forums before posting i did find a few similiar cases but the answers werent very useful to me. oh and could my problem cause bad mileage? because i dont think my car is very efficient at all...

hopefully i will become a regular on these forums sorry for all the questions in 1 thread =)

4th lockout is normal when cold, replace your thermostat.

also, if its never been changed PLEASE change the transmission fluid! You can do a simple drain and fill and change out about 1/2 of it, it will shift much nicer and last longer. I assume this is a 4 speed auto, not the 3 speed? If it IS a 3 speed also change the differential fluid since its separate from the transmission.
