I thought my 1996 corolla had a 3 speed auto, but I swear that I can feel it shift 3 times (so 4 total gears). I've been searching on google, but I can't really see if they ever made a corolla with the 1.6 and a 4 speed auto. Is there any way to tell for sure, as in, will it be on a sticker somewhere on the car or anything? Wish my Corolla had a tach. This would be so much easier.
If you see an overdrive button (O/D) - then you have a 4-speed automatic. Other than that - you likely have the A131L 3-speed transaxle, what you are probably experiencing is the RPM drop when the transaxle locks-up at speed - completely normal, does this to increase efficiency by "locking" the impeller and turbine sides of the torque converter - effectively creating a mechanical coupling instead of a purely fluid one.

That must be it. I don't have an overdrive button and I didn't know the transaxle locked up. Thanks
I was just reading some trans rebuilding papers and saw that the transmission ID is on the ID sticker on the door pillar if you need a real ID of what came in YOUR car.
At first I thought my 7AFE was an 4spd til I saw the L, 2, and D which made me think it's only a 3spd, plus mine does have an O/D as well. So now I guess I have a 4spd Auto?

Yes you do. OD is engaged with the O/D switch and not the transmission selector.

Thanks alot.
So I was right the first time guessing that it's a 4spd. Lol. Then went back to believing that it's a 3spd seeing that it only has L, 2, D on the selector, but cool!
