Exclamation DIY: Polyurethane Filler in the Motor Mounts

Polyurethane filler in the motor mounts
This is a very simple mod you just need the following stuff:
Spare mounts from the store or yard oem preferred.





I found these on a paseo in the boneyard. Just so you don't have any down time with your car. A tube of 3m window weld and a caulking gun. Peel the bottom panel off the tube then slip it into your gun.here is a pic of the tube.



You can find these at any napa location. Ok now I left the small part on to fill up the tiny areas first on both mounts. then cut down the a bigger size for the not so small parts.







For the larger sized area I took the whole cap off and squirted it in direct so i would not get any air holes.







Then used an old screw driver to smooth it over push any air out. once that was done I left them alone to dry 30 min later they will start to dry up on the out side it takes longer to cure the inside the most important piece of all.



I will give it prolly 3-4 days to fully cure then install them. once I do that I will be doing a rear mount with the same proccess. Also looking into the front mount on the corolla/celica setup too. Hope this helps somewhat with your engine mount problems. Oh yeah i recommend wearing gloves this stuff is supper sticky adheisive.

I have done this and can attest to it working. Just prep the mount properly first by degreasing the rubber as once you torque the engine and it flexs, it will separate and shift out. Ive been through it.

McMaster-Carr also sells the stuff in various shore hardnesses. You MUST degrease the rubber or you'll be replacing the mounts all over again in not much time at all. (Ask me how I know).

I did mine with painter's tape covering up the bottom side to give the mount a smoother look--didn't work out well, would recommend possibly wax paper held on with painter's tape.

this is a good write up my only concern is do you feel more vibration in the cabin when doin this? i've heard the mounts last longer but you get more vibration in the cabin which is not a real good feeling if your car is still a daily, so can anyone tell me how much vibration if any do the driver and passengers get? this would help my decision to do this proscess also or not.

there is VERY minimal added noise. the poly that comes in the tubes for windows is stronger than the rubber, but still pliable. i could still move my mount around when it was cured and it was all poly. i burnt the rubber out and made it solid poly. it will never wear out or break.

this is what i used on mine from home depot. $7 a tube. and you can use paint thinner to clean up and smooth out the poly in the mount.

So this is supposed to add life to the motor mount right? But the trade off is some more noise? How long do the normal aftermarket mounts last?

No not more noise, a little more vibration felt from the engine and it will add life to engine mounts. Doin it this way prolongs the engine mounts life but does not gave you all the vibration that full poly engine mounts would. One of my mechanics tried it with a Ignis sports and he said he checked back the mounts after 3 years and they are still in good condition.

i think i have mine for over 2 years now and it's still all good. i only did the front mount because that was the only one that was trashed. so the engine vibrations are minimal even with a solid poly mount. i'll have to make one soon for a friend so i'll take pics of them and add them here.

I did this with mine, only they've cracked. Luckily I already have the mounts out for another issue. I think this time around I'll be doing what kaitaiya did and just get rid of the original inner material and fill them solid with polyurethane.
