Rear struts

Good evening,

My next repair will likely be replacement of the rear struts. I've glanced at the Haynes and will look for a DIY thread. I will likely try to tackle this at the boss' shop where air tools are available. I am just working on a daily driver to save gas $$ so nothing high performance is necessary. Any recommendations on what brand and where to purchase? It seems some lower end Monroe struts can be had for about $60/each plus shipping, but I've not looked much.

TIA,

Chris

If your just looking for struts. I've got mine at prime choice auto.com. they are like 30 or something free shipping over 35 dollars. They have complete ones there for like 80. But if you use the complete ones. Warning do not use the nuts that come with the strut. Use your orignal ones. As for me one of the studs stripped. and i changed the top plate with the original one.

But if your just getting struts you won't have this issue because your goin g to use the original top plate prob.

Hey 96 corolla,

Prime Choice appears to be the least expensive when free shipping is considered. Did you get one of their shocks or another brand AND have you been happy with it thus far??

I bought the complete strut assemblies from Prime Choice for my '99 Corolla, which I believe has the same suspension as your generation. I was impressed with the quality and shipping for such a low price. When I pulled my original rear OEM springs off, I could compress them at least an inch by sitting on them, so they were due for replacement.

I have the prime choice rear struts on my wagon. I got the whole assembly. They fixed my rubbing tires from the oem struts with 220k on them. The ONLY bad issue I have with them is that they are louder riding then the oem, but I have a wagon and can hear them easier.

Thanks guys,

I will give them a shot. Just over $40/side with free shipping is about $20 less than the closest competitor.

KYB are well worth the money.
Monroe arent very good but they do have SOME damping.
Gabriel are to be avoided at all costs. I've had them fall apart.

I would get KYB-GR2 struts off ebay.

Those are the cheapest quality struts out there IMO.

Ok if you get prime choice. DO NOT use the two nuts that they send you if you buy the complete assembly.(As for the third nut there isen't any for the three nut. You have to use the bolt that they give you) As if my case one of the nuts stripped and i ended up replacing it with the original rubber. Which was a pain cause i had to take it apart again. USE the OEM ones.

Part from that i'm happy with the quality they only been on for maybe 10,000 km though.

Oh another issue i had was with the complete assembly on the one side. When i went to put it in the studs didn't line up. one of off by like a mm so i just kinda pryed it over with pilers. But it was very very slight. And that was that. And that was the side that didn't even strip it was the other.

Order brake pads to while you have the free shipping. There cheap. But i have no comments as i've still not put them in.
