over rev

i think my buddy over reved my 97 corolla.... i think he downshifted into 2nd gear while going 50-65 MPH. in the manual it says max gear speed 50-53MPH. as far as i can tell the engine is fine, its a bit noisey though so i really cant tell if any damages occured. how can i be sure? any suggestions? thanks

Your engine will be fine, that's the whole point of the rev limiter . As long as he didn't hold it there valve bouncing for more than 5-seconds or so then damage to the engine isn't likely. Damage to the transmission on the other hand is far more likely. Are you sure the noise wasn't always there?

i can safely say the engine will be fine, the c50 5speed manual in my corolla will let the car hit 64mph at 6500rpm revlimit
the gearbox should be alright too, maybe give it a gear-oil change though to be sure

If you're traveling faster than the rev-limit (fuel cut) speed of a particular gear, then no rev limiter will keep the engine from rotating past the limit. The speed of the transmission will FORCE the engine past the RPM fuel cutoff point. So if you hit the rev limiter at around 55 in 2nd gear, and you're going 60-70 and throw it in 2nd, there will likely be damage.

Do a leakdown test to see if there is any valve damage.

the only thing I can think of is... start watching for oil consumption, if you do that too often the valves won't like it.
