I have a friend whose 97 Prizm (1.6 3 speed auto I believe) was rear ended while parked on the street and is now totalled. I am going to look at tires and battery for sure, maybe some heat/air control knobs and window cranks etc., but didn't know what else I should consider saving before she sells to a junkyard or crusher. The car is in northwest Missouri if someone close by is interested. It still drives, but she was worried about the body getting into a rear tire if she drove over a bumpy road. I will take some pics on Friday and post.
My front windshield has a crack and scratch. Would they swap? Is that a DIY any more or not? It seems with these newer adhesives, it's not that easy to get the "new" window out w/o damaging it.
I would save the gas cap. Compare your seat condition to here's is yours more worn out?? The wipers, oil cap, alternator, mirrors incase yours get side swiped. Anys for me i would save alot of things. I would even just wanna play in taking things apart in the engine compartment so if you have have to it to yours you have some experience. But that's just me, your probably more mechanicly inclined than i am. The exhaust i don't know where you live but up here in canada the salt can eat them up within maybe 4-5 years. o2 sensors?
Oh all the bulbs interior and exterior. Maybe the brake light housing they sell for like ~50 on ebay. Well that's for corolla. Part it out before you give it to them lol.
I assume the front window would be identical (as to fit) for the GEN 7 Prizm's, can someone confirm that for me?
I enjoy most DIY jobs, but haven't ever pulled a front windshield and replaced. The one in my car has a crack that is NOT a problem and is scratched on the passenger side (again not a problem).
New runs $180 installed, so I wouldn't be saving BIG $$. But I wouldn't fix it if I couldn't get the windshield for free (or darn near). Probably $10 in wire and $10-$20 in adhesive, plus a full afternoon get it done??
Interior door handle trim. Those things seem to break all the time!
Amen! While you're at it, get a rear view mirror as well. Might just be bad luck, but the one that came on my Corolla had a broken day/night switch and was really loose, and the day/night thing in the replacement for it broke last winter after two years. I also second grabbing the gauge cluster.
I took a look at the wrecked 97 Prizm today. Looks great from the passenger side, but the drivers rear is tore up. I forgot the camera, but will make sure I take it next week.
I removed the stereo for her because she wanted it out and pulled a few pieces today. Best thing was a full size spare. And with the two donuts, I'm going to take two wheels/tires just to get the last mileage out of my fronts and the two I take off this car (about 3/32"), replacing my slick rears.
I didn't start it today, but it should run and drive. She would take $250 for it and be happy. I am wanting the handles, lights, etc. and the front windshield. I can get $250 for scrap, but didn't know what market their was for other pieces/parts, being ebay or on this site. Is there any market for the motor/three speed tranny on these cars? My wife and I were considering putting it out back (we have 17 acres in the country) and letting my 11 year old work at taking pieces off and selling them to raise $$ for camp this summer. Seats etc. are in fine shape, but I don't know what the local market would be on those, if anything. All comments welcome.
Well for corolla parts i know there is a market i'm not sure about prizm as i know there the same. But like interior parts do they look the same??
Cause things like the din around the radio would be like 30$
The seats probally like 50
The tail lights 30-40 each
headlights 30-40 each
tach if it has one 70-90
exhaust if in good shap 60-100
Again this is for corolla. Sorry as i'm not to fimiliar with the prizm sister car.
You know it adds up. Problem is though always finding buyers. But i think it would be a good experience for your kid. And if you go the space why not? Or is it the eye sore that bothers you?
Eye sore is not a real problem, I've got a spot on the other side of the garage in the field where I keep my honey bees that is not easily seen, but still close enough to the garage to keep from toting tools a long ways.
When I checked ebay, there were quite a few mirrors, lights, etc. and for about the prices you listed, but almost none were being bid on??
I tried to swap glasses on a Jeep before. Never doing that again, it was really difficult getting at the adhesive without cracking the edges. You then have to be super careful to support it equally when moving it around...
Before you strip the engine you should take it to the dirt track
I went ahead and bought the parts car today and drove it home. Even with a donut on the rear, it goes down the road nicer than my 95'. I am considering swapping struts/springs all the way around among other things.
This car has 101,000 miles on it, but isn't as "clean" as my 95'. I know she just had new rotors and pads put on front, so I will swap those at some point as well. My wife is going to ask around about someone to do cheap bodywork so she could make it a daily driver. I can't imagine any numbers small enough to interest her, but we will see. I will likely pull the parts I want and some others to keep around or sell. At any rate, here are some pics.
