Poor gas mileage!

Newbie here!

I drive a 96 corolla DX with a 7AFE engine and auto tranny that is only getting a paltry 19 mpg! I have changed sparkplugs, air filter, fuel filter very recently and still the same mileage ..what gives?

Thanks

Ed

Just keep at it doing bits of maintenance until it comes back up. If your engine is badly worn or internally broken no amount of work will make it better. Do a leakdown test to see if the valves and rings are still in good condition.

I'll tell you that my mileage had steadily climbed as I took car of little problems.

Thanks for the replies guys...what about the fuel pressure regulator?
I read somewhere that these go bad causing poor fuel economy...ever heard of that one?

Car has only 50k miles since new! It was my mother's car, but she moved out of the country recently and left it behind. it has had regular maintenance performed AFAIK, but i never heard of fuel economy problems before, maybe since it was seldom used this never was a problem until now, but these cars are supposed to get 30+ mpg. Compression is great on all cylinders too so i am at a loss here!

Since it was seldom used I might suspect leaky fuel injectors. Try some of the addidtives first and if that doesnt help have them checked and/or rebuilt.

You may also want to check the tires to make sure they're at the proper psi.
