gas tank leaking

Hello

My 1996 Corolla Dx is leaking gas if I fill the tank more than one third. It slowly drips and I end up with a fuel puddle near the rear left wheel.

it looks like the leak comes from the seam that joints the upper and lower halves of the tank

does anyone have replaced a fuel tank before, could you please share some tips here

alternately, can I use the JB Weld stuff or epoxy? I only need a temporary fix for maybe one year. I have been told that replacing the fuel tank at the dealer costs about $1000 and I can't afford that

thanks

It's most likely the breather hose near the top of the tank. It can be accessed by removing the rear seat and looking closer. Also check out the fuel neck filler for corrosion, that might be on it's way out as well. In any event, you'll need to drop the tank in order to inspect the condition further and determine what direction to take. Any respectable shop will be able to get you an aftermarket fuel tank for a fraction of the dealer cost. If you plan on going the repair route, you can check out fuel tank repair kits at princess auto or canadian tire. I personally wouldn't recommend it though as there is always a chance of it coming back or not working at all considering the age of the car.

I had to have the fuel tank on my car replaced very recently.
I had leaking 'rusted through' fuel pipes (pipes going on top of the tank). My tank was rusting but in useable condition. The mechanic broke something in the process of unbolting the tank and I had to have the tank replaced as a result.

The tank (aftermarket, probably Spectra brand) costed me around 200 dollars and I paid 220 dollars in labor for replacing part of the fuel lines I mentioned and replacing the tank. I could have gotten the same fuel tank from rockauto or amazon for way less (around 130-150 dollars) including shipping but the shop did not want to have my car up on the hoist waiting in there so I accepted their price.Their part would be shipped the next day and my part would be delivered in a few days since it was low-cost or free shipping on Amazon.

It was a local small town Dodge/Chrysler dealership. Not a Toyota dealer or an independent shop. Depending on your choice in shops in your proximity you should pay no more than 400-500 dollars for parts and labor in total. Hopefully way less.
