Steering issues...

Hello ToyotaNationers,

Lately, there is a grinding when I turn the steering wheel. I suspect the issue is the power steering pump because the grinding continues when I turn and hold the wheel, but a local tire plus said it was the rack...which'll cost me about $1200 USD...about 50/50 parts and labor. Please help me pinpoint what the problem really is.

Thank you!

How is condition of the fluid? Could give a clue as to the condition of PS pump.

Do you have assist in either direction? The first thing I would do is change the fluid.

How many miles does your car have? When was the last time you changed the fluid? Have you checked your belt?

Change the fluid, check the PS belt/hoses/pump before thinking about the rack. Friend of mine fixed his AE101 PS issue just by changing a leaking hose and flushing the fluid.
