Anyone replace their gas lines?

I replaced the brake lines a few weeks ago and noticed the fuel lines were in just as bad a shape. Now I'm smelling gas when I park the car.

I'm guessing the very fragile looking fuel return line next to the brake lines didn't like me pulling the old brake lines from the snap clips. I should really replace all three fuel lines all the way back.

Anyone done a full line replacement? Do I need to drop the tank? What are the connectors on the fuel tank - flare nuts? Any tips?

(If you are only replying to tell me gasoline will ignite easily and I am a moron for attempting this, I am already aware of those facts. )

Yes I have done it. I THINK I did it without dropping the tank. There are flare fittings on the hose from the fuel pump.

It's a pretty simple job actually. I did this on my AE92 after the fuel send line burst and dumped a couple gallons of gas all over the road before I realized what had happened. I did not replace all of the line, just from firewall to trunk. I used a flare tool for the ends (or you can have the parts house cut and flare lines) and used rubber hose to connect the old lines to the new with hose clamps. I do believe you have to drop the tank if you are going to replace the WHOLE line, among other things. I replaced a tank on my Geo AE101, it's really not bad at all, just make sure you have a jack or another person to hold the tank in place.

Keep in mind that repairing the pressure line with ANYTHING other than one solid line can be a safety issue. It may not leak now, but how long will it hold?

Mine held for 3 years, about 47K miles. Car was junked for other reasons. There is no completely solid line anywhere in the system, plenty of rubber elbows. Purchase the right hose, you'll be fine.

if using rubber fuel hose, you NEED to use the stuff with the plastic liner inside.

Yes there are rubber hoses in the system but they all have swaged fittings to hold pressure. I posted my caution since I'm sure there will be someone who tries a cheap hose clamp on an old rusty piece of line and doesnt notice the leak until the exhaust ignites it!

Be safe!

You can buy line, and then just buy the fittings and flare it yourself. Thats what I did on my old one. The fuel filler neck is just 8mm bolts if i rememeber at the tank. Two 14mm bolts hold the straps at either end. You can disconnect the pump through the cover in the floor under the back seat cushion. The rest is straight forward. Just use Flare nut wrenches otherwise you will strip the old fittings and perhaps not get them off. Spray them once or twice in a good penetrating fluid like pb blaster and let it sit before trying to take them apart.
