Door handle stiff

I have a 1997 Corolla. The passenger door handle, while the door still opens fine, it is stiff. When you open the door, the handle remains upright and doesn't spring back down as a normal door handle does. I have to push the door handle back to its normal position. Is there a fix for this or does the handle need to be replaced?
