cluth pedal height

Good evening all,

The car is running great, but lately I have noticed a slight grind when I shift every so often. I checked my pedal height this evening and it is only around 5". I thought it looked pretty good, as it matches the brake pedal. However, Haynes calls for 6" from floor to top of pedal. It would seem that adjustment may help me, as it may disengage the clutch more completely with more travel. Any comments or suggestions? Doesn't look like too bad of an adjustment, but I don't care for working under the dash. Never easy to get to.

The pedal height should be at 5-1/2" to 5-3/4" roughly. Also to adjust it isn't too bad. But you will have to unhook the master cylinder rod coming thru the firewall that hooks to the pedal. It's a threaded rod so once you unhook it, you can screw the clevis in or out to adjust the pedal height. The clevis has a pin going thru it and the pedal with a retainer on the pin. Like you said the hardest part really is becoming a catortionist to get under the dash and see what your doing lol

Thanks trife,

I never like working on my back like that. Got the pin and clevis pulled easily enough, but pedal travel is limited by "switches" top and bottom (similar to a brake light switch). Even with the clevis free, I would have had to push the clutch plunger in to get it off the pedal to make adjustment. The top switch is threaded and there was some adjustment there, but nowhere to put a wrench so it isn't easily adjusted. I just chose to put it back together. Fully depressed, I can shift into/out of all gears just fine, so I'm not sure it is worth messing with currently.

Thats odd, I seem to remember having jus enough room to adjust it. I will say, if the pedal is in the way. It has a return spring, unhook it, real easy, then one bolt thru the pedal where it hooks to the pedal bracket. It's basically the pivot bolt. Remove it and the pedal will come right out. Just becareful and don't loose the little plastic bushings (2 each) on that pivot bolt. Then you should have plenty room. Sorry, it's been a little while since I messed with it.

Describe more WHEN it grinds. Mine did that at higher rpm mostly but also with more load (3-4 people in car). My gear lube was too thick causing drag on teh synchro's and making them slow down too fast. I lived that way for years with 4 places saying only fix was a rebuild of tranny (all had changed the GL4 also).

BG Synchro Shift II on recommendation of a friend (RIP GEOFF) who worked at BMW. They had similar issues on some and replacing with slightly thinner gear lube fixed it. I did mine and 30 miles later grind was gone for good. I replaced it with new BG every 2-3 years there after for good measure. $45 covered all 3 quarts needed and from my experience...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
