Smile Timing Belt Replacement

Is the 2E engine (1.3 L) on a 1994 manufactured Toyota Corolla (Model EE100R-AEMDS) of interference type? at what mileage should timing belt be replaced? Does mileage depend on manufacturer of belt?

Yes, the 2E is an interference engine. The timing belt should be replaced every 80,000 to 100,000km (50,000 to 62,000 miles), regardless of which brand of belt is installed.

Thanks a lot for the information. Considering that the engine is of inteference type I better go by the lower interval of 80,000 km. Thanks again

No problem. It's highly recommended to also change the water pump at the same time

Thanks. My present odo reading is nearing 80,000 km but I noticed a sticker on timing belt case stating it was replaced at 47,856 km!! (by previous owner). I guess I can wait till I reach 127,500 km to change again and also replace the water pump at the same time.

Just a final query : Is it standard practice to replace the tensioner also when replacing the timing belt

I did when I replaced mine. It's not an overly expensive part so I did it more as a precautionary measure than anything. You'd get away with doing it every second timing belt change, but for peace of mind you may as well get it done while everything else is off, especially considering that your engine is the interference type
