If not, take a stiff wire brush and loosen all the flaking rust. After that, dremel with a grinding attachment, or an angle grinder, take all the rust off, down to bare metal everywhere you see rust.
Could I use something like rustoleum rusty metal primer instead of the KBS coating? also, for the paint, could I use something like a spray can from automotivetouchup.com? or could I just use the toyota touchup paint bottle? any suggestions? My paint code is 8j7.
I've never used that stuff so I can't tell you if it works or not. The thing about the KBS coatings top coat is that it dries rock hard and resists rock chips, moisture and heavy applications of salt. I repaired my wheel wells 3 years ago and there is no new rust forming on the repaired areas. After using it, I can say that the kit is worth the money and trouble of prepping.
For the final coat I used a spray can by as long as it's OEM color matched you should be okay. I wouldn't bother with touch up paint as it would be a hassle to apply and ensure a nice even coat.

yeah, you've got the common rust. The rust comes from underneath, and you are just now starting to see it, it is not surface rust. The more paint you remove, the more rust you will find. Trust me, I tried all sorts of ways to get rid of it, but it keeps coming through even where the metal looks good. You are fighting a loosing battle with this one. The car will still be safe to drive and all, but unless you rebuild the entire 1/4 panels with new metal, you can expect the rust to be around forever.

I know this is an old thread lol but I never got around to doing anything about the rust. Do you guys think its worth a shot for me to start sanding, or should i just leave it as is? Anyone else with 7th gens having this issue?
btw, awesome mesh grill tut on your cardomain gold94corolla, I might try that eventually

What I did was grinded it down to bare metal, put the rustoleum primer on, then regular primer and then paint and multi clear coats. I think it looks good and I think it is worth it. Then again I'm 17 and this is my first car, but who would I be if I did not try to make it better?

Was your rust in the same spot? How's the paint job holding up? That sounds pretty simple, I guess i'll try that. It looks like surface rust so I don't think I should have issues. Thanks!
How did you guys blend the colors together? Was the new paint a close enough match that you didn't have to worry about that? Where did you get your basecoat from? My car is Blue Steel Metallic so I'm not sure if I could just run to autozone to get the paint...
Thanks for all the help!
Google up some automotive paint shops in your area. Some will take a scanner to your car and mix up a custom can of paint in whatever form you want. A bit pricier but worth it if you want a better match.
