Im expecting to get my 97 Corolla back this week. it been repaired after the valves somehow burnt without the engine overheating (probably from me driving it home after it lost power). Apparently I lost compression in 3/4 cylinders and blew the head gasket with only 120,000 kms on the engine. But Ive got too much into the custom stereo and body work on the car so want to keep everything original if i can.
Though...I would like to give her a little more power! any ideas? I would like to get a turbo and a chip but not sure if there are any available for my car. Should I go with headers, a cold air and exhaust?
Let me know, I have pics of my car in my garage if you can access it? not sure if we can look at other ppls garages on here?
Honestly, there's not much you can do to increase power on these cars. I/H/E will probably change the sound and net you like like 5hp, if that. Turbocharging it will be mostly a custom job.

5 HP is better than nothing...plus anything will feel alot more powerful than running on 1 cylinder (I cant believe I made it home) it made it approx 20 km up hilly dirt roads lol,
Have you heard of anyone installing a performance chip in a 97 DX Sedan? ...I know this model isnt really meant for performance with the EGR valve engine and being really meant for a economic fuel saving car, but it would be nice to be able to keep up with my buddies lol
Let me know if they make performance chips for my car?
The Toyota ECU is notoriously untuneable. Especially the OBD-II era ones. OBX makes a decent knock-off header on Ebay, you can pick up the 2.5" cat-back Tsudo N1 Fireball (or whatever it's called these days) piping there too. Be aware that with a stock engine that much diameter will not only kill your power but also perhaps your eardrums. You'd be better off getting a decent muffler (I'd suggest a dual-loop Honda one, tried Magnaflow and Flowmaster and our cars drone on the highway with them) and a 12" or so resonator and having your local exhaust shop fab up something no bigger than 2".
Serious power addition with these takes serious money. The 4AFE is basically useless without a custom performance rebuild and the money would be better used for a 4AGE engine swap, you CAN go turbo on the 7AF (narrow valve angles make for early boost) but that's all an uphill battle too and the engines weren't built to take it. Unless you have a lot of spare cash, an unusual amount of love, a lot of time, or good buddies who own a tuner shop and owe you bigtime, stick with I/H/E and concentrate on the suspension.
Wow! Thanks man! I wish I new that much about cars and engines lol...from the sounds of things, I think I am going to keep my Corolla as an economic grocery car lol...If I want something with power, I think I may be better off with purchasing an entirely different car all together lol.

yes, you get it! You understand your car perfectly.
It means what it states. The car will be louder after those modifications. How much louder and the tone would depend on which intake, header and exhaust combination you choose.

the 4afe can hold good power if built right. but if you want to jump off the bridge with everyone else to be like most people, then go ahead. not hating on the 4age motors . just hating on the lack of (i never done it so i know it wont work)people.
but if u love your car and want to build the motor you have .it can be done .
