1. Fill the tank.
2. Set the trip.
3. Drive through at least half a tank.
4. Fill again.
5. Note miles on trip meter.
6. Divide miles by the gallons it took to fill the tank.
7. ?????
8. Profit.
You can't figure fuel economy by going off the gauge.

The needle for the fuel goes up and down whenever you press on/off the gas, and make those curvey roads. I hate when the needle does that.
I get about 340 miles on a tank of gas. I kept filling up my car when i hit the halfway line, and until i hit the 13 gallon mark. Pretty good when my car has 143500 miles and i never replaced the o2 sensor. Actually my mpg went up after I replaced the right front motor mount; not only did my car stop vibrating when driving and at idle, but i got at least 5 more mpg.

When you fill up your numbers should be in the 30-35 range.

I wish my 1.6 3 speed auto got 30 to 35. My window sticker which I still have says 26 city and 32 highway. With the gas that is being sold today I get 24.5 to 25 mpg consistently in city driving.

Make sure your thermostat is working! I have kept a fuel log since the first fill-up of my 1.6 L 3 spd purchased used in 2005. I did a full tune up (plugs, wires, rotor, cap, timing belt, water pump, front O2 sensor, transmission fluid, switched to synthetic oil, air filter, cleaned the throttle body, coolant change) and have averaged 26-27 mpg since that time. After realizing that I may have a faulty thermostat (6 years later), I changed it and since then I have been averaging 30-31 mpg with no change in driving habits. My .02
I don't trust my gas gauge so I just drive around until i reach the 250-260 mark and then fill it up. Usually just takes 7.5-8.9 gallons to fill it up all the way. I average around 29-30 but after changing my oil just a few days ago I averaged 32 mpg.
