Fuel Line Leak.

Ok, I searched and came upon this one thread that shows a picture of the exact same fuel line that mine has been leaking:

Note: Picture isn't mine:

The leak on mine is where the hard line meets the rubber hose only. The hard line isn't all wet like shown in the picture; only where the hard line meets the rubber hose. I read that it can be done w/o dropping the gas tank. My 95 Prizm LSi has been a winter beater and I'm sure every little bolt underneath are rusted to sh*t.

Can somebody confirm this that it can be done w/o dropping the tank by snaking a new fuel line down from up top if I pull the rear seat up? I'm a maintenance tech at VW, and I do have access to a hoist, so things will be alot easier and I have my own tools at work too. I'm thinking about just cutting the line half a inch back and just use a longer rubber hose and a set of new fuel line clamps just to stop the leak for now til I can get that hard line later.

Any inputs are welcome.

I had the same problem a couple years ago, initially wanted to do what you suggested but when I started moving the fuel line, it was so rusted that when I disturbed it, the line crumbled in several places and broke. I ended up replacing the entire line. It is expensive OEM but if you can find a generic steel tubing, I think that will be much cheaper. You will have to bend the turns yourself.

And yes, you do not have to drop the fuel tank to replace either the main fuel line (larger diametre hose) nor the smaller return line. Both go to the fuel pump that is accessible by lifting up the rear seat. After lifting the rear seat, you will see a cover and electric connector for the fuel pump.

Thanks for the reply.

I was about to install a longer hose over that leak but as I tried to, I disturbed the line like you said and made a crack where it goes up, and so I decided to just replace it. I had to go to Napa and get a brake line, bend it myself, and flared both ends. Also got new fuel clamps on there as well. I only had to lower the tank down just enough for me to get my hands in there to remove it from the rubber hose up top. It wasn't too bad. Bought the brake steel line for only $4.00 or so and did it myself at my shop.

Now the fuel vapor steel line is in rough shape. Might have replace that one as well. But later on though.
